After many reader requests, I am happy to share that this month’s book giveaway is especially for middle school teachers! It’s called The House of Comprehension: Teaching Students the Elements of Literature, and is designed for use with 6th-9th grade students.

The book’s author is Constance D. Casserly, a veteran teacher with over 30 years of experience as an English Language Arts teacher in middle and high schools. She designed The House of Comprehension to be a complete program with activities and printables for teaching the elements of literature to middle schoolers. So, if you don’t have a set curriculum to follow, you could easily use this book for your unit on literature elements. If you do have a curriculum, the activities stand alone in a way that makes it simple to pick and choose only the ones you need.

I found the book to be very well organized and easy to follow. The Common Core State Standards are clearly labeled for each activity, though the book covers such foundational skills and concepts that it’s relevant no matter which set of standards you’re using.

The teacher info as well as printables avoid the cutesy look (as is appropriate for older students) but are attractive and very thoughtfully designed. There is no wasted space on the printables, which I really appreciate–they’re designed to fit as much great content in as possible so you don’t have to make excess photocopies. I’m including some page images below–keep in mind that print copies of the book are in black and white, but you can purchase a full-color eBook here.
